Organisations

There is a strong Guild which meets on a Wednesday evening.   It is extremely active and supports all aspects of church work at home and abroad. They take part in the World Day of Prayer service, supply soup and bread lunches for a Forfar churches’ project during Lent, entertain and provide suppers for a local disabled club.

Prayer Groups and House Groups, under a Church without Walls initiative, meet regularly.  Groups include members of all the Church of Scotland charges in Forfar.

The Steeple Times is the quarterly church newsletter, which is distributed to over 800 households in the congregation.  It provides members with information about the life and work of the church.  A Sunday news-sheet is also published each week and distributed at the church door to inform members of activities and publicise forthcoming events.

Music plays an important part in our service and is led by our dedicated choir and organist.

A new group Friends of East & Old has been developed to harness community support and provide a stepping-stone to membership. Events held this year and last included a Cheese and Wine, a Concert in the Church, a Glen walk, a Burns Night, an illustrated talk on Forfar churches and a Coffee Morning. Funds from these events have helped in furnishing the social area in church. Christmas cards produced by the group, featuring scenes from our stained glass windows, sold well.

There is a very strong Boys Brigade Company with a set of halls for their own use. There are three sections – the Anchor Boys, Junior and Company Sections. They meet on three evenings each week and enjoy various classes and activities. There is a compulsory Bible Class for the boys each Sunday.   The boys and leaders rededicate themselves at a service held in the church at the beginning of the B.B. year. Their quiz team won the Scotish and National BB Championship in June of 2009.

Children from the age of three up to Primary 7 join in the activities of the Good News Crew, which meet every Sunday morning. The Good News Crew participate in services throughout the year, particularly the Nativity play and at Easter.  The children annually hold a joint Picnic with the other churches.

We are actively involved in mission projects such as Open Doors, Christian Aid and Mary’s Meals appeals. We sent parcels to the Black Watch troops in Afghanistan last year. There will be a 'Souper Sunday' to help the HIV/AIDS project on Sunday 25th April after morning Communion in the hall.

There is an ecumenical association ‘Forfar Action of Churches Together’ embracing the five Church of Scotland charges in the town and surrounding district, plus the Episcopal, Catholic and Baptist churches and the Salvation Army.
